The Croatian Cultural Education Society “Matija Gubec” The Croatian Cultural Education Society “Matija Gubec” from Ruma is one of the oldest societies in Vojvodina. It was founded as far back as 1919, and it has been functioning continuously ever since. The society has 420 members, organized into several sections. The members of the tambura orchestra have been recruited from the school of tambura, which exists as a part of the society. The mainstay of the society is definitely The Grand Tambura Orchestra, which has 32 members in full force. Precisely thanks to this orchestra, Ruma has become a festival town, since “Matija Gubec” Society is one of the founders of The Festival of Music Societies of Vojvodina. The orchestra participated in all the previous festivals and on those occasions won 12 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze plaques. The orchestra is also one of the founders of The Festival of Yugoslavian Tambura Music in Osijek. Nowadays, it is The Festival of Croatian Tambura Music, where “Matija Gubec” is the bearer of 2 silver and 2 bronze plaques. During its long history, the orchestra had a countless number of performances throughout the country and abroad. It participated in numerous events, as well as radio and television programs. During the previous years the orchestra had some of the more important performances in “Lisinski” Concert Hall in Zagreb in 2002, during the event “Srijem sings to Croatia”, as well as the all-night concert in Zapresic and Vukovar. The performance at “The Autumns of Vinkovci” and various encounters of cognate societies definitely contribute to the significant concert activity of the orchestra. An important concert was held in Novi Sad in “M” Studio, as well as the participation in a broadcast of “Novi Sad” Television “The Golden Strings of Vojvodina.” The Grand Tambura Orchestra “Matija Gubec” gives its annual concert in the large hall of the Cultural Center of Ruma. In 2005 it was the concert named “A Hundred Tambura Players of Ruma”, when exactly one hundred of tambura players were present on the stage, while the guest was Vera Svoboda. The orchestra is a participant of “Sava Vukosavljev” Festival in Zmajevo, and a permanent contributor of Cultural and Historical Society “Pcesa” from Novi Sad. The orchestra also had a distinguishable performance during the celebration of 35 years of work of “Radio Srem.” In 2005, the Orchestra made a new compact disc in “M” Studio of Novi Sad Radio having 21 compositions by Josip Jurca, the conductor of the ensemble, while Srem Telivision made 12 music videos. The album promotion was held on November 19th, 2005 in the crowded hall of the large hall of the Cultural Center of Ruma. The promotion was recorded by “Novi Sad” Radio-Television and “Srem” Television. The vocal soloists who are permanent members of the orchestra are: Dusan Stupar, Marija Bencic, Bogdan Dejanovic and Katarina Atanackovic. Various lectures on agriculture are held in the “Matija Gubec” Society, as well as book promotions where the members of the society also take part. There are a dozen of dances a year at the society, as well as the usual New Year’s Eve celebration. Beside all these things, the basic goal of the Croatian Cultural Education Society “Matija Gubec” is the recruitment and education of the members, especially the young ones, helping them to enrich their lives through art, music, dance and education and to positively influence the people they are surrounded by and the life environment they belong to.
