The Festival of Music Societies of Vojvodina

The Festival of Music Societies of Vojvodina, as the greatest musical event of amateur musical creativity in Vojvodina, was founded in 1964. Its founders were The Association of Music Societies of Vojvodina and Cultural and Educational Association of the Municipality of Ruma. The festival is financed by the Secretariat of Culture of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the Municipality of Ruma. Its organizers are the Municipality of Ruma, Institute of Culture of Vojvodina and the Cultural Center of Ruma. The 45th Festival was organized and performed in June 2008 at the Cultural Center of Ruma. For a number of years, the Festival functioned according to the traditional scheme by which it lasted for four days and it had a four different concert evenings. The first festival evening was reserved for the large tambura orchestras. The second festival evening was reserved for the best orchestras of classical music (chamber, accordion, guitar orchestras, and brass bands). The third evening was meant for the best choirs, while the final evening was the time for the best folklore ensembles. As a rule, the beginning of the festival was announced by a brass band instrument, and it was officially opened by municipal, provincial or republic officials, the representatives of the Provincial Secretariat of Culture, Department of Culture of the Republic of Serbia and prominent cultural officials. During 40 or so municipal and 10 or so county contests which take place every year with the participation of 70,000 amateurs, only the best ensembles are selected and invited to take part in the Festival of Music Societies of Vojvodina and, all together, they represent all the richness and diversity of the music creativity of Vojvodina. As another rule, between 1500 and 2000 members of various music societies used to come to Ruma during four festival evenings. In 1976, when Ruma became too crowded for the amateurs, it was decided to disburden the Festival. The Festival of Folklore Traditions was moved to Vrsac and the Festival of Youth Choirs was moved to Zrenjanin. Due to the war in ex-Yugoslavia and the financial crisis, since 1996 the Festival has become a biennial one. Every other year, in the first week of June, the best ensembles of folk music and dances, the best choirs and the best orchestras of classical music perform in Ruma. The number of festival evenings and the number of participants have also been decreased, but the importance of the Festival, as the top event of music amateurs of Vojvodina has remained permanent, waiting for the better days and hoping that the worst is behind us.
